Co-Workers in the Vineyard

The Online Portal for Lay Ecclesial Ministry

Distance Learning Directory for Lay Ecclesial Ministers

I am pleased to present the National Association for Lay Ministry’s first Distance Learning Directory for Lay Ecclesial Ministers.  It represents NALM’s commitment to the formation of lay ministers.  The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, is clear that people ministering within the Catholic Church need education in theological studies as part of their formation for ministry. Going beyond catechesis, “lay ecclesial ministers engage in theological study for the sake of a broadened and deepened faith and a better-grounded and informed ministry.”  In Co-Workers, not only do the Bishops affirm the need for education of lay ministers, but they also suggest the use of techniques that maximize participation in coursework, including distance learning.  With this in mind, this directory offers a partial listing of distance learning opportunities across the country. It is meant to be a starting point as people consider furthering their formation with education.

I urge you to consider furthering your education, whether seeking a certificate or degree or simply taking classes to update your knowledge and broaden what you bring to ministry. I hope this directory will be a way for you to begin your journey and deepen your service to the Church.

I want to thank all the schools and programs that are a part of this directory. Their support of lay ministry and their ongoing commitment to formation is a gift to the whole Church. Below you will find a complete listing of all the schools that were generous enough to participate in the Directory.

Catholic Theological Union, the largest Roman Catholic graduate school of theology and ministry in the United States, now makes its renowned faculty available to students everywhere through distance education. In keeping with a tradition of over 40 years of excellence in ministerial preparation, CTU’s online instructors have earned Certificates in Online Instruction from the Catholic Distance Learning Network through the National Catholic Education Association’s Seminary Department. They now bring their expertise to ministers seeking a ministerial credential like a Certificate in Pastoral Studies completely online. Courses for the Certificates can also be applied to the Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (MAPS), a professional ministerial degree, consisting of 48 semester hours. In addition, students may petition for advanced standing in the MAPS and credit for non-credit ministerial training programs such as diocesan formation. Conventional standards established by the Association for Theological Schools (ATS) for North American schools of ministry require an integrated approach in preparing a minister. Theological preparation and personal spiritual formation of candidates require a period of residency provided during one-week Summer Institute courses, some blended courses which meet 3 Saturdays per semester and an annual Saturday retreat. Diocesan formation programs may also supply some of the spiritual formation requirements. Newly renovated rooms with private baths are available for on-site events.
